at the doorstep
there seems to be a grace period at the close of a relationship, a period of time where the rules are loose and people can be as awesome or as terrible as they want to be with little immediate consequence. kind of like after the death of a beloved one, or a pet, or a school mascot. a period of grief, of acting out, of very awkward trips to someone’s apartment to reclaim an out of print copy of a book outlining man’s perfect diet in eden (written by a very stern german), or a white tank top (that would only cost two dollars to replace and is pretty stained anyway…), or a toothbrush. standing awkwardly at the doorstep, unsure whether or not to go in, or wait patiently on the stoop.
i would like to start a series of comics called “at the doorstep” that makes fun of this awkwardness. if you have any great break up stories that might be fun to draw, please email them to me, and we can all break up together.
